A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a secure connection that allows your computer to access the University computer network when you are not on campus or if you are using wireless connections.

Instructions for Windows 8

Be aware that internet connection speed will be slower due to the fact that all traffic is being routed through OBU’s network.  Disconnect from this connection once you have completed the work needed.

1.  Display the Charms bar, click Search, and then click Settings.
2.  Type VPN into the Search box.
3.  Click the Set Up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connection button in the Search results pane.

4.  Enter the following information:The VPN server address, vpn.obu.edu, into the Internet Address text box
A descriptive name to help you keep track of the connection (such as OBU VPN), in the Destination Name text box
5.  Click Create.

6.  Right click the VPN connection and choose View Connection Properties  win8vpn3
7.  Click the Security tab and change Type of VPN to Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)

8.  Change Data encryption to Optional encryption (connect even if no encryption)

9.  Under Authentication choose Allow these protocols and check Microsoft Chap Version 2 then click OK

  1. To use the VPN connection choose Settings from the Charms bar and select the Networks icon
  2. Select the VPN connection and choose Connect.  Enter your OBU email username and password then click OK.
  1. To close the VPN connection choose Settings from the Charms Bar and select the Networks icon
  2. Select the VPN connection and choose Disconnect.

Creating the VPN connection

1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Network and Sharing Center
4. Click Set up new connection or network

5. Click on Connect to a workplace

6. Click on Use my internet connection (VPN)

7. Enter vpn.obu.edu for the Internet Address and OBU for the Destination name then clickNext

8. Enter your username and password. (Optional, check box to remember password) then click Connect.

Using the VPN connection

    1. Click on the wireless icon in the bottom right hand corner of the window
    2. Select OBU then Connect

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to the desired resources

Closing the VPN connection

  1. Click on the wireless icon in the bottom right hand corner of the window
  2. Select OBU then Disconnect

Instructions for Mac

1.  From the Apple menu select System Preferences macvpn1a_000
2.  Click Network.  Make sure the padlock icon is unlocked in the lower left.  If it is locked click it to unlock.  Enter the password for an administrator account.
3. Click the + to create a new connection
4. Select interface VPN
5. Set VPN Type to PPTP
6. Click Create

7. Enter the server address vpn.obu.edu
8. For the account name enter your username
9. Select the VPN (PPTP) connection in the left side of the window and then click the Advanced buttonOptional:  Check the box to Show VPN status in menu bar

10. Check the box to Send all traffic over VPNconnection

Using the VPN connection

  1. From the Apple Menu choose System Preferences then Network
  2. Select the VPN (PPTP) connection on the left then click Connect

Closing the VPN connection

  1. Return to System Preferences and Network.  Select the VPN connection then click the Disconnect button.  If the VPN status is displayed in the menu bar, click the VPN icon and from the drop-down list select Disconnect.

Instructions for iPad

Be aware that internet connection speed will be slower due to the fact that all traffic is being routed through OBU’s network.  Disconnect from this connection once you have completed the work needed.

  1. Go to Settings>Network>VPN
  2. Turn VPN ON
  3. Add VPN Configuration
  4. Select PPTP
  5. Enter a description
  6. Enter server vpn.obu.edu
  7. Enter your username for the acount
  8. Click Save

 

Using the VPN connection

  1. Go to Settings>Network>VPN
  2. Turn VPN ON

Closing the VPN connection

  1. Go to Settings>Network>VPN
  2. Turn VPN OFF
